「RURI to ISHI」は、建材やプロダクトの素材として利用されることを想定したテラゾー（人工大理石）です。混ぜ込まれているさまざまな色や形のガラスは廃棄される予定だったもの。エネルギー消費量を減らし、環境への負荷を抑えた、廃材ガラスの新しいリサイクルの形でもあります。
開発したのは、装飾ガラスの総合企業・中日ステンドアートが2023年6月に発足させた「装飾ガラスデザイン研究所」。「RURI to ISHI」の開発の裏側をご担当者にうかがいました。
■背景・コンセプト
「装飾ガラスデザイン研究所」は、自社のアートガラス製作時に出る端材を有効利用するためにスタートしたプロジェクト。その取り組みのひとつが、産業廃棄物である廃ガラスを使ってテラゾーにする「RURI to ISHI」です。テラゾーとは、大理石などの石材を細かく砕いた「骨材」をセメントや樹脂と混ぜた建材のことで、「人工大理石」とも呼ばれます。
コンセプトは「ガラスと石の出会い。廃材ガラスの新たな可能性を探る」。ステンドグラスの端材をはじめ、廃棄となる鏡や太陽光パネルなどを活用した、環境に配慮したモノづくりにチャレンジしています。
通常、ガラスをリサイクルする場合、1600度以上の溶解炉の中で溶解、均質化、清澄（せいちょう：ガラス中の泡を除去すること）をおこないますが、その過程で膨大なエネルギーを使用します。環境負荷の観点からこうしたリサイクルの方法に疑問を持ち、新たなアプローチとして異素材との組み合わせを試みました。
試行錯誤の結果、カラーバリエーションや材料である骨材を選択できるテラゾーの特性と、自社のアートガラスの製造ノウハウを組み合わせれば、十分にガラスの美しさを保ちながら魅力的なマテリアルになるとの結論にいたりました。こうして、産業廃棄物である廃ガラスを使った「RURI to ISHI」の商品化が決まったのです。
「RURI to ISHI」は今までのテラゾーにないようなカラーパレットを用意し、視覚的にもワクワクするようなものにしています。プロダクトとしてはもちろん、建材などへの応用も視野に入れています。
■特徴
手はじめとして、「RURI to ISHI」では5つのバリエーションを提案しています。
１.カラフルなガラスを混ぜ込む
ステンドグラスの細かな廃材を混ぜ込みました。石の骨材とは違った色鮮やかな表情が特徴です。
２.ガラスと素地を同系色でまとめる
素地の色に合わせて、ガラスの色を同系色でまとめました。素地の色とガラスの色、組み合わせ方によって無数の表現が可能です。
３.ガラスの形で遊ぶ
廃材のガラスを溶かして板状にし、幾何学の形に切り出しました。意図的な造形が加わることによって、テラゾーの表現の幅が広がります。ガラスでつくったロゴやサインを入れることも可能です。
４.ガラスを貫通させる
大きなガラスを貫通するように埋め込んで、研ぎ出しました。不透明な石に透明なガラスを組み合わせることで、美しいコントラストが生まれます。
５.鏡・太陽光パネルを混ぜ込む
鏡と太陽光パネルのガラス廃材を混ぜ込みました。鏡が周辺の色を映して豊かな表情を見せてくれます。また、今後問題になることが予想される太陽光パネルの再利用の方法の一つとして提案しています。

昨今サスティナビリティを意識した商品開発が求められる中、ただ単純に材料をリサイクルすることのみに焦点を当て、SDGsを意識した商品としてリリースすることに疑問を感じていました。
アートを提案する企業として、まずは意匠的にワクワクできるもの、かつ製造時に余分なエネルギーを使わない商品を開発することが社会的意義を持つと思い、開発を進めました。
加工のバリエーションを提示することにより、企業のみなさんやデザイナーの想像力を刺激するような魅力的なものになったと思います。

中日ステンドアートが建築・インテリアで取り組んできた技術や知見をこれからのものづくりに生かしていくために立ち上げたブランド。ガラスの持つ装飾的な豊かさや永続性に着目して、自然や文化など「大事」にしたいものを「ガラス」に閉じ込める。いままでに試みたことのない表現や在り方に挑戦し、自由な発想で装飾ガラスの新たな意味や可能性を探っていく。
